4 Days Loei Province – The Colors of Mekong Culture
Day 1 | Loei – Chiang Khan [Lunch]
After arriving at the airport, we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before driving to Chiang Khan District’s Ban Na Pa Nhad where we visit Tai Dam Cultural Centre and Museum. The Thai Dam, or Black Thai, are an indigenous tribe who live across the region. They call Loei in Thailand home and have set up a cultural centre near Chiang Khan, which serves as a sustainable tourism project where visitors can learn more about the ethnic minority’s history, cultures and traditions. Here, we will be able to interact with the locals behind the centre, see an original Tai Dam-style house, experience traditional games and try your hand at making a Tai Dam amulet – a flower pin believed to bring happiness and fortune. We then continue to Chiang Khan for a gentle boat ride along the River Mekong to Kaeng Khut Khu islet.
Overnight at Mountain River Resort or Chic Chiangkhan Boutique Hotel.
Day 2 | Chiang Khan - Dansai [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner]
An early rise is rewarded with the unique experience of taking part in the daily alms-giving ritual carried out by monks before breakfast back at the hotel, or at a local restaurant. After breakfast, we explore Chiang Khan, a quaint riverside town that is over a century old and is situated next to the meandering Mekong River, which serves as a border between Thailand and Laos. We will take either a walking or tricycle tour of the town and stop to visit attractions including Wat Sri Kun Muang, which serves as a temple and centre of Lanna and Lan Chang art, ancient Wat Mahatas and then we will sample a traditional healing foot massage at Kidthoeng Na Chiangkhan. We then check-out of the hotel and drive to Dansai district and stop for lunch at a floating raft restaurant that serves Isaan delicacies before visiting Wat Phu Rua Ming Muang Temple where we can watch monks hand-building their new home. We check-in to the hotel before dinner.
Overnight at Phu Na Come Resort.
Day 3 | Dansai – Muang Loei [Breakfast, Dinner]
We start the day with a leisurely bike tour of Dansai town and stop at the market and handicraft shop where we make ton puoeng, a bamboo structure decorated with candle-wax flowers that we will give as a sacred offering at our next stop, Sri Song Rak Pagoda. This revered temple complex was built in 1560 as a symbol of unity between the Ayutthaya and Sri Sattana Khanahut (Vientiane) kingdoms. We continue to the hillside temple of Neramitre Vipassana, before visiting Phi Ta Khon Museum to learn about the famous Phi Ta Khon Festival, also known as the Ghost Festival in which people dress up in colourful costumes and ghoul masks and perform energetic dances throughout the streets. At the museum, we paint our own mask made from local materials, such as coconut husks. We will then return by car to have lunch at the hotel, or a local restaurant, before departing for Muang Loei. Lunch is charged to your own account. Overnight at Loei Palace or Loei Pavillion Resort.
Day 4 | Muang Loei - Bangkok [Breakfast, Lunch]
In the morning, we drive to Ban Pha Whai village in Nong Hin district to visit a local home where hand-painted bamboo piggy banks are made. We then take a noisy but short ride on a traditional truck used by farmers to reach the peak of Phu Pa Poh mountain – dubbed Thailand’s Mount Fuji – for breath-taking views. We then cook up a storm in the kitchen with a cookery class at a local restaurant where we make a spicy som tam salad. After lunch, we head to Bodhisat Cave and the Stone Garden, one of three stone gardens in the area that give the region its moniker of the ‘Land of Sea Mountains’. The rock formations have taken between 230 and 280 million years to form and are similar to Kunming’s stone gardens in China’s Yunnan province. Here, we learn about protected plants and medicinal herbs. We then drive to Muang Loei (about 90 minutes) for your onward flight.
